Many people say that strong leaders and people come out of a tough and challenging background. The same kind of person was Babu Rajendra Prasad.
Babu Rajendra Prasad was from a poor family and he was a good student. Sri Mahadev Sahay’s son Babu Rajendra Prasad was born in 1884 December 3. He was from Bihar. Mahadev Sahay was a Pandit in Sanskrit and Parsi languages.
He liked Science at the beginning of his career and later, he became a lawyer later. However, he had proven his leadership skills, by conducting Science Students conference in 1906.
He was attracted to Congress and joined Congress in 1911. He worked as a lawyer in 1916 he started “Search Light” English magazine in 1918 and “Desh” a Hindi magazine
In 1916 he met Gandhi Ji and he followed him and in 1920 he participated in the non-cooperation movement. 1924 Bihar and Bengal helped the poor people who were affected with flood. His social service attracted many people and even British officials.
In 1934 when Babu was in jail, there was a natural calamity of Bihar Earthquake. And the British officials sent him to serve the people. He collected 38 lakh rupees to serve the victims.
He was with Gandhi Ji in all the times. When some of the leaders left Gandhi, at that time also he was with Gandhi Ji. He participated in many nationalist movements led by Gandhi Ji and he served the country in many ways. He was in Salt Satyagrah and Champaran Satyagraha
1950 January 26th The first President was India was Babu Rajendra Prasad and he was unanimously elected as President of India for consecutive terms. He also played an important part in making the constitution.
He used to take only 50% of the salary and he used to travel in third class. He was so modest and his love for his country was ultimate.
After his wife’s death, he started realizing that, he had become weak and the “Vairaghya” was realized by him. Great people might foresee before anything happen. In 1963 February, he passed away.
He was posthumously awarded the highest civilian award, Bharatha Rathna. With love, the people used to call him as Desh Rathna.
He wrote many books and some of his books were Sathyagraha at Champaran, Athma Katha, At the feet of Mahathma etc.
