Chennai Super Kings won the toss and invited the Mumbai Indians team to bat first. Mumbai Indians steadily played and scored 162/9. There was a good start with Quinton De Kock who scored 33 and Rohit Sharma with 12 runs. In 5th over new recruit, Piyush Chawla took a wicket and broke the building partnership of the first wicket. The later second wicket fell and another mentionable partnership was built by Surya Kumar Yadav (17) and Saurabh Tiwary (42). Two crucial catches, which sent Saurabh Tiwary and Hardik Pandya (14) back to the pavilion, were taken by Faf-Du-Plessis, the pace of the score slowed down and Mumbai Indians could score only 162/9 in twenty overs, a decent score.
Chennai Super Kings started their innings by losing two quick wickets, but, Ambati Rayudu (71) and Faf-Du-Plessis (58*) made a better partnership, and Ambati Rayudu’s half-century and Du-Plessis’s unbeaten half-century helped the Chennai to build a good score after that, the scoring slowed down a little, for a brief time, Sam Curran and Ravindra Jadeja played well to take the CSK team to initiate the tournament with a win by scoring 166/5 in 19.2 overs.
