India is a great place, with little brainwash, we may forget the history of atrocities, the same with the Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan. He was a tyrant and bigot.
Tipu Sultan started converted the Hindus to Muslims and killed the Hindus who were reluctant to convert to Islam.
Politics to get the support:
In 1789, Tipu donated money and the land to the Sringeri peetam but the truth was, he lost the war against the British and Marathas, as a result, he had sent his sons to the custody of the British and he had to pay a huge sum of money to British. Even people also started opposing him, for his atrocities and converting the people. So, in this hostile situation, Tipu wanted to get the support of the Hindu religious people. As a part of that, he donated the land and money to Sringeri. It was completely political and to stabilize his position in the Kingdom.
Mandya / Melukote Iyangars were massacred:
As per a calculation, Tipu massacred 1500 Iyangars about 230+ years ago. A section of Melukote iyyangars of Bharadwaja Gothra still does not light up the lamp on Diwali, as this incident took place on the same day.
This community had migrated from Mandyam near Tirupathi to a place in Mandya district in the 1700s.
SN Simha, who hails from the community and administrator at Melukote Sanskrit college said people were performing the prayers at Lord Narasimha temple on Naraka Chathurdhasi day in Sri Ranga Patna when the massacre took place. According to Mr Simha, the incident took place in Sri Ranga, not in Melkote. According to Simha, Tipu ordered the killing of unarmed Iyengars and hang their bodies to the tamarind tree in the temple premises, which still exists.
Tortured Malabar people and converted them to Islam:
The Mysore Sultan, Tipu Sultan captured the Malabar, and there, he forcibly converted many Hindus, tortured them if not converted, and killed them. As per the record, he destroyed thousands of Hindu temples.
Here is an inscription found on a stone in his palace :
“Oh Almighty God! d ofispose the whole body of Kafirs (infidels)! Scatter their tribe, cause their feet to stagger! Overthrow their councils, change their state, destroy their very root! Cause death to be near them, cut off from them the means of sustenance! Shorten their days! Be their bodies the constant object of their cares (i.e., infest them with diseases), deprive their eyes of sight, make black their faces (i.e., bring shame).”
—Mysore Gazetteer, Volume 2, Issue 4, Conjeeveram Hayavadana Rao (Rao sahib), Benjamin Lewis Rice, Government Press, 1930, p. 2697
Francois Fidele Ripaud de Montaudevert, a French soldier who fought for Tippu, in his diary entry of January 14, 1799, writes:
“I’m disturbed by Tipu Sultan’s treatment of these most gentle souls, the Hindus. During the siege of Mangalore, Tipu’s soldiers daily exposed the heads of many innocent Brahmins within sight from the fort for the Zamorin and his Hindu followers to see.”
Another fact was, while he was battling, he understood he would be killed and he had been running into the fort to cover himself, by that the time he was killed.
He claimed proudly to have converted 4 Lac Hindus which would have to be done forcefully.
Writing on 19 January 1790, to Badroos Saman Khan, Tipu Sultan said
I have achieved a great victory recently in Malabar and over four lakh Hindus were converted to Islam. I am now determined to march against the cursed Raman Nair (Dharma Raja Karthika Thirunal Rama Varma).
He raped, killed and mutilated almost 80k Christians from the general population thinking they colluded with the British. Kindly note that this number of deaths are not of soldiers fighting a war but of civilians caught in his crossfire.
Father Bartolomeo, a Portuguese traveler and historian, claims:
First a corps of 30,000 barbarians who butchered everybody on the way… followed by the field-gun unit under the French Commander, M. Lally. Tipu was riding on an elephant behind which another army of 30,000 soldiers followed. Most of the men and women were hanged in Calicut, first mothers were hanged with their children tied to the necks of mothers. That barbarian Tipu Sultan tied the naked Christians and Hindus to the legs of elephants and made the elephants move around till the bodies of the helpless victims were torn to pieces. Temples and churches were ordered to be burned down, desecrated and destroyed. Christian and Hindu women were forced to marry Mohammadans and similarly their men were forced to marry Mohammadan women. Those Christians who refused to be honoured with Islam were ordered to be killed by hanging immediately. These atrocities were told to me by the victims of Tipu Sultan who escaped from the clutches of his army and reached Varappuzha, which is the centre of Carmichael Christian Mission. I myself helped many victims to cross the Varappuzha river by boats
And now the Andhra Pradesh MLA is trying to erect a statue of “Tipu Sultan”. If the politicians want some great Muslim, who served the country, they could have chosen APJ Abdul Kalam, not the Tipu kind of tyrant who killed Lakhs of people.
